These Mora Knives Are The Best

In last week’s article, I wrote about our backyard chicken processing adventures.  We used our Mora knives and… wow!  These things work great.  Having a good, sharp knife makes all the difference.  These slice through chicken… like butter.

I’m going to order another four, just to keep around the house as spares.  At $15 a pop, these have to be the deal of the century.  Swedish steel.  I get the one’s with the rubber handles so that they don’t slip when you’ve got blood and chicken guts on your hands.

Absolutely phenomenal knives.  I can’t recommend them, enough.  Click here to read more about these knives at Amazon.com.

A South African hunting guide used this knife to kill an angry water buffalo that was trampling his father. Watch the video [Editor: Unfortunately, they removed this video from Youtube– it was great!] at the bottom of this page, as it is the single greatest video testimonial for a knife (or for anything, really!) that I’ve ever seen. Keeping watching it to the end, as it shows the guide killing the water buffalo. [Warning: It’s graphic!] If you don’t want one of these knives after watching this video… you may have to turn in your man-card. This is a tested and proven tool for use in the outback.

If you’re looking to test out a Kukri because you’ve read about the legendary Gurkhas but you don’t want to spend a lot of money or worry about leaving it in the yard or if it gets stolen from your truck– this Kukri  is a good option. I’ve got one. The price is definitely right, but I’m not crazy about the handle.  If that doesn’t bother you, then consider that it’s definitely more of a “chopper” than your typical machete.  I could see it easily going through a limb if you had to use it as a defensive weapon.  It’s not my first choice in blades, but it is the one I grab when I don’t want to worry about something I’m chopping messing up my knife, and you can’t go wrong with it at this price point.

Cold Steel GI Tanto Knife

Warning: curl_setopt() expects parameter 2 to be long, string given in /home/bagkatz/public_html/sobertgummer.com/wp-content/plugins/amzn/tarzan/_httprequest.class.php on line 336

This knife is a massive hunka-hunka steel. You could almost use it as a pry bar, it’s that thick. Read my article on how it compares to the Becker.

Most telling review: “This knife is a beast! All you have to do is hold it in your hand and you know this is not something you have to worry about breaking. With a minimum amount of care this hunk of steel should out live me.

I’ve owned my knife for about a year and find myself pricing it on Amazon while considering it as a gift for a family member. I have put this blade through the paces time and time again. I’ve pried with it, I’ve dug with it, I’ve cut sod with it, I’ve cut cord with it, I’ve tapped nails back in with it, I’ve batoned logs, I’ve split kindling, I’ve done rough carving with it, I’ve even made box forts in the living room with it – this knife does it all! Obviously there are tasks other blades would be more suited for but the best knife for the job is often the one you have handy and this a good all purpose knife.

I continue to be very happy with the kydex sheath. Curiosity about the kydex sheath was one of the reasons I purchased the knife – I’ve always been a leather kinda guy when it comes to sheaths. The sheath has far exceeded my expectations. Many miles later it still snaps firmly into place and holds strong. I prefer the top of a knife to hang even with my belt or below and the screws give you the option to raise or lower the knife in relation to the belt loop which is a nice little bonus. Another bonus is the snap and velcro in the belt loop allowing you to remove the sheath from your belt w/o having to unfasten your belt – not a feature I would have shopped for but more handy that I would have thought.

Over time the black coating on the blade has worn through in places but after the hard use that I have put on the blade it would be unreasonable to expect it to stay intact. The blade holds an edge fairly well through hard use but leaves a little to be desired in this area. However to be fair I would not be treating the edge this way if I expected it to be a fine detail blade.

In summary this is a great knife for the money and I would buy it again in a second if I lost mine.”

As its name suggests, our G.I. Tanto is a no-nonsense tactical knife that comes with a legion of practical uses. It may be lean and spare, but it delivers the goods where they count the most! The broad Tanto point blade, integral quillon guard, and Polypropylene handle scales, exemplify a tactical knife stripped down to its bare essentials. It's ground razor sharp out of 1055 carbon steel with a hard spring temper and protected by a black, rust resistant finish so it's ready to take all the abuse you and Mother Nature can dish out. Heavy, sharp and wonderfully balanced, it's easy to throw by either the blade or handle and it hits with real vigor. In a survival or self-defense situation, it can be quickly and easily converted into a spear or war club. Just remove the handle scales and lash the blade securely to a suitable wooden shaft! Best of all, it's a great value. Please don't throw away hundreds and hundreds of dollars on similar knives sold by convicted felons and rip off artists posing as elite "military operators". Get the real G.I. Tanto from Cold Steel and get more than your money's worth.

Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel

Warning: curl_setopt() expects parameter 2 to be long, string given in /home/bagkatz/public_html/sobertgummer.com/wp-content/plugins/amzn/tarzan/_httprequest.class.php on line 336

This is Cold Steel’s upgrade to the Spetsnaz E-tool (shovel). Sobert Gummer says: “Get one, you’ll find a hundred uses for it. But be sure to get the optional cordura sheath for it, too– you’ll thank me, later.”

Most telling review: “Excellent product, made of top-notch material. It works great for chopping and digging, works ok for slicing/cutting and bushwhacking. Basically an excellent camping tool, or shovel/hatchet replacement in any limited-weight situation (e.g. survival). The steel is remarkably durable, I usually dig in gravely areas, but the shovel hasn’t lost it’s edge yet. The handle can be a bit slippery, but nothing you can’t fix with a tape and paracord handle-wrap or a lanyard (drill a hole through the back, loop some cord through, tie it off).”

Product Description

The Special Forces Shovel is modeled after the original Soviet Spetznaz shovel. The Spetznaz soldiers made up the most elite unit in the Soviet Army. The U.S. equivalent would be our Green Berets. The shovel head and socket are forged from medium carbon steel, then heat treated for maximum strength. The edges come sharpened to a utility/axe edge that can easily be improved to razor sharpness.

The Bushman– The First Knife I Bought When We Returned To The States

Warning: curl_setopt() expects parameter 2 to be long, string given in /home/bagkatz/public_html/sobertgummer.com/wp-content/plugins/amzn/tarzan/_httprequest.class.php on line 336

I own the Cold Steel Bowie Blade Bushman. It was one of the first knives I purchased when we came back to the States.

This review sums it up nicely:

“Purchased this for my bug-out-bag/camping/hiking gear. It is now one of my favorite pieces of equipment. Arrived very sharp. The solid construction is great, this isn’t something that should break anytime soon unless you just abuse the heck out of it.

The handle is comfortable and I love the fact that this can be easily converted into a spear. The handle is hollow with an open end on both sides, the open end on the blade side allows for you to run a limb all the way through the handle (whittle the inserting end of the limb as the blade side opening is smaller than the handle opening) towards the blade point which will help prevent your limb from breaking should you need to use it as a spear.

You can almost replicate a full tang effect with the knife.”

For the money, the Bushman® knife might be the strongest survival/outdoor knife in the world! Unlike most hollow handled survival knives, there is no joint or seam between the blades and handles that requires a mechanical fastener. Instead, the Bushman's® blades and integral handles are each expertly cold forged out of a single piece of 2.5mm thick SK-5 high carbon steel. The resulting knives are expertly heat-treated and tempered to RC54 and, when subjected to our tests, have withstood over two tons of pressure on their blade/handle transition! Every Bushman® blade has been carefully ground to an extra thin edge, and then honed and buffed by hand until razor sharp. The Bushman® knives are versatile too! Their hollow handles will accept survival supplies or a variety of handle extensions which can maximize reach. Features continuously curved blades that are ideal for skinning, and will pierce, cut, slash, slice and shear like you won't believe. Comes complete with our new heavy duty Cordura Survival sheath which features a utilitarian pocket on the front for storing small items.
